I know why the Caged Bird sings was the latest impetus for this post. Situations have the ability to lead people, to react in ways they may not normally. Pain, starvation, manipulation, shame and humiliation has the ability to silence thought. But when your back is against the wall and the only outlet you have is to write your way out I choose to be positive and share. It seems to me, that institutions, secret societies and networks have the ability to silence voices they perceive to be unqualified to speak. But who determines what the qualifications and standards are for who is allowed to speak publicly. I know from personal experience what it has felt like to have your narrative reshaped and edited to fit into a space that was probably never meant for you. And does slut shaming serve a real purpose in excluding someone from speaking. Especially, if they are A) single, B) grown as hell, C) Ya'll don't say nothing when the boys do it, D) we are not slaves, E) HUMANS are ANIMALS (remember that one ladies), the next time someone tries to call you a ho.
I’ve found that people tend to encourage diversity and inclusion as long as it fits within their space. But if we’re really asking for leaders to change the world then I will no longer be silenced, intimidated or pressured not to speak freely about promoting Black culture or whatever else I think is dope AF. And so, the writing begins. Trying to hold someone hostage to reduce their economic viability harms diversity in spaces, but ironically it can spark creation. IF you were paid to play then please do not come to me and tell me that you’re down, if you never even did it for THE FREE. EVER. PERIOD. Please do not try to silence my voice AGAIN. I am no longer afraid to speak, because I know why the Caged Bird SINGS.
